How it's calculated

Melee and Ranged share one formula, run through the effective-level engine used across this site:

max hit = floor(0.5 + effective level × (gear strength bonus + 64) / 640)

Magic instead scales a fixed base max hit by a flat gear percentage:

magic max hit = floor(base spell/weapon max hit × (1 + magic damage %))

Worked examples

99 Strength, Piety, Super strength potion, Aggressive -- boosted level118
Effective Strength level156

Trident of the Seas (base 20) with 10% magic damage22

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the max hit formula?

max hit = floor(0.5 + effective level x (gear strength bonus + 64) / 640), where effective level = floor(boosted base level x (1 + prayer bonus %)) + combat-style bonus + 8. For melee, the boosted level and style bonus apply to Strength; for ranged, to Ranged (with the style bonus applying only to accuracy, not damage -- see the note below the calculator). Magic works differently: see the next question.

Why is magic max hit calculated differently?

Most combat spells and magic weapons have a fixed base max hit (Fire Strike's is always 8, for example) rather than one that scales with your Magic level the way melee scales with Strength. Gear magic-damage percentage (from items like Tumeken's Shadow or an Occult necklace) then multiplies that fixed base: max hit = floor(base spell/weapon max hit x (1 + magic damage %)). Magic level does still affect your accuracy roll, just not your max hit.

How much does a Super strength potion actually add?

OSRS potion boosts follow a flat-plus-percentage formula: boost = floor(level x percentage) + flat amount. A Super strength potion is +15% and +5 flat, so at level 99 Strength it adds floor(99 x 0.15) + 5 = 14 + 5 = 19 levels, before prayer and style bonuses are even applied on top.

Does the combat style I fight with change my max hit?

For melee, yes: Aggressive adds +3 to your effective Strength level (more damage), Accurate adds +3 to effective Attack instead (more accuracy, not damage), and Controlled splits +1 across Attack, Strength and Defence. For Ranged, no combat style adds to damage -- only the Accurate style's +3 goes to your accuracy roll, which this max-hit-only tool doesn't compute (see the DPS Calculator for the full accuracy picture).
